Does this by itself even say anything anymore right now? It has become as empty a slogan as saying free Palestine. Any logical thinking mind would want to stand with Isreal, and also free Palestine, and also like Ben & Jerrys ice cream, and also want to end world hunger, etc etc. The situation in the Middle East is way beyond explainable through one-liners and slogans. Yes Mark, I stand with Israel too. I am also anti-violence. I also would like the people in the Gaza settlements to have better lives and a place that will accept them. I also acknowledge that after 66 years of observing where this whole thing is going with the state of Israel, it is highly unlikely that diplomacy will ever establish peace in that region, or that cease fire agreements will ever last. Celebrities holding up memes sure doesnt help. Whats the point of this photo? Will Zuckerberg somehow be engaging in constructive dialog with Rihanna (who tweeted Free Palestine last week) thus creating celebrity-peace in the Middle East by tomorrow lunch time? I dont think so. All this photo contributes is a platform on which more pro-Isreal Facebookers can say See, I knew Im right! whilst inspiring more Muslims to become even more radical about the subject. Why do so many people feel the need to pick a team? Does Zuckerberg think that there will even be one Muslim who will change his mind about Jews because of this photo? Is he that pompous? As the movie War Games taught us; when two experienced players engage in tic tac toe, there will never be a winner. And to pretend at this point that this is not tic tac toe, is to be unfairly selective (towards either side) about which moments in history we care to remember. How many more years of rinse-repeat will we allow in this region --whilst witnessing the deaths of tens of thousands and the incessant breeding of radicalism on both sides-- before we zoom out far enough to comprehend that the moment we pick a side in this conflict, is the moment we lose all hope of solving it? Radical Muslims must become moderate in order to achieve a breakthrough in the Middle East. Lets focus on how to achieve THAT. And lets learn from history and common sense that this will never happen by bombing them, just like it will never happen by celebrities posting one-liners on social media, not even when it is the head honcho.
