Election Day USA—Tuesday, Nov. 4—is just around the corner. So of course were being hammered by the attack ads, half-truths, lies and flaming nonsense that are now par for the course in American politics. This hokum would be laughable if it were not undermining democracys deep foundations—mutual trust, civil discourse, and serious engagement with the urgent issues of our time. But all is not lost! Too many of us care about democracy to allow Big Money—with its Divide & Conquer and Bread & Circuses tactics—to continue to rob We the People of the collective power thats rightly ours. Cast your vote on Nov. 4, of course. But remember that voting every two years is the least we can do as citizens—and the least isnt enough. There is much we can and must do daily to restore the civic relationships that help us hold our leaders accountable to the common good.
