Endocrine disrupting chemicals are everywhere: in our cosmetics and daily care products, our household appliances, our children’s toys, food packaging and containers, in our computers, and in our cellphones, just to name a few. What exactly are these chemicals? According to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, “endocrine disruptors are chemicals that may interfere with the body’s endocrine system and produce adverse developmental, reproductive, neurological, and immune effects in both humans and wildlife.” The top five endocrine disrupting chemicals that are of most concern at the moment are phthalates, flame retardants, formaldehyde, parabens and triclosan, but there are dozens more to watch out for.
