FIVE GROUND RULES FOR INTERNS The following are five proposed ground rules governing our 2013/14 internship programme which commenced last week. Deshnee, Bekhe, Sebe, Chelsea and Zi, please comment on the proposed ground rules by Friday this week. If you are all in agreement, they become RR policy effective from Monday, July 15. Groundrule #1: Send a diary of what you are working on each day - by 9am latest, or preferably the evening before. Email what you have accomplished at the end of each working day. Groundrule #2: Write a minimum of 500 words a day, providing insight into your ongoing learning experience with Roving Reporters. Your challenge is to make your work-integrated-learning diary interesting to read, but more importantly, to simply instil the habit of writing every day. For now, just make it a ‘free-writing’ exercise that will develop a life of its own as we proceed. Groundrule #3: Respond to each mail you receive from RR as soon as you have read them, indicating that you fully understand the briefing or whether you have any queries arising. Groudrule #4: By Monday 4pm each week, submit a story proposal. A good starting point will be to scan the newspapers for possible follow up stories that you would be able to tackle with minimal supervision. I saw at least two such stories in this week’s Sunday Tribune. Groundrule #5: Unless you have otherwise advised that you are unavailable, be on standby at all times for tasks that might be assigned to you. You never know when you might get called on to cover a breaking story. So keep your phone by your side at all times when you are on duty. READINGS By 4 pm on Friday each week, you must submit a 250 – 350 extract from a book that you consider to be a fine example of good writing. WEEKLY ‘EYE ON THE WORLD’ BLOGS Your weekly blog should ideally reflect on an issue that talks to Roving Reporters core focus: social, environmental and justice issues critical to the growth of a more open and caring society. In looking for material to write about, you might want to start listening to SAFM regularly. There are often fascinating talk shows. Also scan as many newspapers as you can each week, searching for stories to write about and comment on. Completion of a weekly blog is mandatory, i.e. in addition to assigned RR tasks.
