FROM THE NEWSROOM: In Thompson, the school board is looking carefully at the districts budget with a worry that a volatile fiscal year might end in the red. The Board of Educations fiscal subcommittee met this week to discuss a possible budget shortfall that may arise in the current fiscal year. Much of the uncertainty is related to excess cost reimbursement for special education, according to the schools business manager Neal Breen. “Its complex, because its like trying to hit a moving target with that,” said Breen. “It has to do with kids moving in the district, kids who might leave the district and just what the costs are associated with special education” Out-of-district special education costs have risen sharply from last year to this year in Thompson; up by ten out-placements to 26, as of November. Along with tuition, costs related to out-placements include transportation and other variables. Board of Education Chairman Bill Witkowski says that school officials are watching spending very closely. While a hard freeze has not been ordered for spending at the Thompson schools, the Board of Education is “putting the brakes on spending” as a precaution. Witkowski says that, with more oversight of the districts finances, the school board will be bettered prepared when planning the next fiscal years budget. The Board of Education expects to have a cleared idea of whether there will be a shortfall in the current budget in February. Tune in for the full report.
