FROM THE NEWSROOM: NEW CANAAN, Conn. (AP) — The state Department of Transportation says it could cost up to $250 million to put a multi-use trail along the side of the Merritt Parkway between Stratford and Greenwich. Advocates have promoted the trail as an important piece of the East Coast Greenway, a 2,750-mile network of trails from Maine to Florida. Michael Calabrese, the project manager for the DOT, tells The Connecticut Post that a large stretch of the path would have to be boardwalks to protect wetlands. Opponents say the 14-foot wide path also would be bad for the environment, requiring the use of asphalt and the removal of hundreds or even thousands of trees. One in a series of public meeting to discuss the trail will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday in New Canaan.
