Financial Times wine columnist Jancis Robinson, lamenting the preposterous expense of newly launched labels, notes this: The joke is that wine is not very expensive to make. Production costs of even the grandest red bordeaux are rarely more than €10 a bottle, €30 at most if the château is run on bank borrowings. And, as for the specially fashioned “icon” bottlings pulled out of a hat by so many new-world producers nowadays, don’t get me started – except to repeat the comment, “Icon: is that one word or two?” ft/intl/cms/s/2/76f1c544-15a7-11e3-950a-00144feabdc0.html#axzz2eG3z3UyE
