First quarter Moon this morning. Moon in the sign of Cancer. The Moon rules Cancer. CNN Headline: there is a ping below the water. An underwater search. Its a good day to talk about the soul. Because the soul lives in the deep waters, speaks through the endless images of the imagination, images of itself...pings us but never fully explains how or why or even where. As soon as any of these answers are given, the soul sees through them, explores them, opens them further, and deliteralizes them. Deepens, softens, holds close. And even in these words...further images of soul itself...a ping but not an answer. Cancer and the Moon point to the most personal level of the soul. The soul of me. The soul of family. Home. Neighborhood. Tribe. Bedroom. Nook. Soft interior. Child within. Mother or nurturer within. Cancer also refers to the constant need to make soul. To be soulful. To be ensouled. We talk a lot about Cancer cozying up with a good book in a warm chair with a thick blanket, not because Cancer means sentimental and homey but because these are images of personal soul making. When we read a book or curl up on the couch and watch a movie, our imagination wanders, and the ping somewhere below the surface appears. We press our ears close...close to the images, close to the warmth we feel below our thick wool blanket, and we listen. Soul is the process of patience...not toward something specific...not revealing something final....and not for any moral reason...but in order to develop a felt relationship with the unspeakable depths...in Cancer the revelation of our most personal sense. The word make here should be distinguished from the word create. To make generally means to fashion from things already existing. Whereas the word create often carries with it the creation ex nihilo or out of nothing or out of nowhere. When we are doing the sideways walking, circular soul making of Cancer the Crab, we are nest building. We are picking up the bits and pieces of these things that ping to us, and we are fashioning them into an image of home. Any time we get caught on the literalism of our souls objects or findings we lose touch with soul. Unless we are able to see the image of literalism as itself soulful...as these very words I write, for example, are a kind of literalism that can only be seen as ironically soulful...as the bits of a nest soul is building. From this point of view, the great organizing principle of spirit, the fiery and unifying or centralizing I (represented today by the squared Sun in Aries), is a kind of optical illusion of the soul. The I or the source or the great self in the sky is like a rogue agent of the soul. From the souls (or Moons) point of view, the I of Aries is the BELIEF in the personal nature of the soul, itself an image of soul, that appears out of nowhere and returns to nothing specifically so that we might each, individually, feel worthy of this soul making process....so that it may appear personal or as mine. The I (from the Cancerian point of view) is the image of the out of nowhere and into nothing hero who serves the great city within (a hero comes unexpectedly). Not organizing us toward a final glorious and personal achievement...but defending us from the crippling feeling as though we are not worthy of the souls most personal expressions through us (which give us that not to be taken too literally sense of my soul). This meditation is not merely intellectual. All words are also images and images require our five senses. We have to learn how to read in this way in order to be astrologers or symbolists or soul makers. We have to learn how to be patient...seeking less the precise meaning and allowing for words and concepts to be like pings. We cripple ourselves as soul readers when our first motive is to grasp what is being said. To grasp. A hand reaching up and out of the waters, or a hand reaching downward to retrieve something below the waters. Soul frustrates that reach....even when we do retrieve something...what we retrieve immediately opens up new depths, and the ping returns again. This is the territory of the water signs...not only Cancer but also Scorpio and Pisces. A lost airplane. A crackling radio. A mystery. A ping. An Atlantis that is great in fact because it doesnt exist in fact. Its the Arian cardinality of Cancer (the fiery modal quality of the water sign that starts the Summer) that fills us with this sense (pervading the psychic air right now) that our soul making is so very personal. Deeply and beautifully, if only temporarily, personal. Prayer: We are standing at a great crossroads this month. We believe in ourselves as soul believes in us. Help us to gather and construct the most intimate fibers of soul as we navigate these grand cross waters....help us to craft an image of these experiences that we can feel at home with...that we can love in close.
