For the fans that cant sleep because they are dying to know what DFA means ... DFA stands for designated for assignment. This term is synonymous with being released, but theres more to it than that. When a player (Uggla) gets DFAed, he is optioned back by the Giants to the AAA team. In effect he can accept this assignment and remain with the team and hope for a recall. He can also refuse the assignment and choose to become a free agent, effectively he is released from the team. Its important to note that he is eligible to refuse being sent down only if he qualifies as a MLB vet (something like having played 5? MLB years). This is why SF can freely option a guy like Panik or Duffy without a refusal. They have not gained the MLB veteran status. For Uggla, it doesnt make a lot of sense to be stuck in the minors. His chances of being back in the bigs is greater with another team that needs immediate help (like SF did). This is why DFA almost always means a player is no longer with the club.
