Former President Obasanjo on Tuesday spoke at the fourth Ibadan Sustainable Development Summit organised by the Centre for Sustainable Development, University of Ibadan (U.I.) in collaboration with the African Sustainable Development Network. The former President carpeted some former governors and former speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Salisu Buhari over his certificate forgery scandal and went further to liken Buhari’s scandal to Tinubu. “During my administration as president, we had some people who were under 50 years in leadership positions. One of them was James Ibori, where is he today? One of them was Alamieyeseigha, where is he today? Lucky Igbinedion, where is he today? The youngest was the Speaker, Buhari, you can still recall what happened to him. You said Bola Tinubu is your master. What Buhari did was not anything worse than what Bola Tinubu did. We got Salisu Buhari impeached. But in this part of the world, some people covered up the other man (Tinubu).” In all honesty, I think there’s a clear difference between the case of certificate forgery scandal of the former House Speaker, Salisu Buhari and former governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu. Buhari didn’t attend any University as at then but he claimed he graduated from University of Toronto. To me, that’s a clear case of certificate forgery. However, Tinubu was not in the country when politicians were preparing to contest for one position or the other. I learnt someone filled the form for Tinubu and attached his (Tinubu) resume with it. It was stated in the resume and the form that Tinubu graduated from University of Chicago, whereas he actually graduated from Chigaco State University. To my mind, this is an honest error though material. He presented the certificate of the school he actually attended (Chicago State University) just that it contradicted with what was filled in the form and in his resume (University of Chicago). I don’t think Tinubu should be compared with Buhari over this.
