French Open Day 4 Recap - The women today decided to go off the cuff with six upsets. The biggest upset of the day came at the hands of the 20-year old Spanish youngster, Garbine Muguruza. She handed No. 1 Serena Williams her worst loss ever with a score of 6-2, 6-2. In Serenas post match press conference, she said that nothing was working for her today. She also congratulated her opponent on her play and said that Muguruza would win Roland Garros if she continued to play the way she did today. However, not more than 63 minutes prior to this surprise did No. 29 Venus Williams lose to the 19-year old Slovakian Anna Schmiedlova. Everyone was looking forward to a third round match up of the Williams sister but will now have to settle for two up and coming players. No. 16 Sabine Lisicki ended up retiring in the second set of her match with a wrist injury. During the second game of the match, she took a tumble and landed on her wrist. After receiving medical attention, she was never able to really play her game. No. 12 Flavia Pennetta and No. 32 Elena Vesnina also lost. The last ladies upset of the day came courtesy of the young 18-year old American Taylor Townsend. Townsend was able to out last the Frenchwoman No. 20 Alize Cornet. It what must have felt like a Fed Cup match for Cornet, Townsend was able to put the crowd out of her head and take the match 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. The US women went 1-3 on the day. Townsend was the lone bright spot. The other US woman that played today was Varvara Lepchenko. She lost in straight sets to the No. 8 Angelique Kerber. Sharapova, Radwanska, Stosur, Cibulkova, and Bouchard are all moving on to the next round. The US men had a better day today going 2-1. Steve Johnson was able to finish off his match from yesterday in relatively quick fashion. No. 10 John Isner needed four sets and three tiebreakers to move on. Unfortunately for Sam Querrey, his run at the French Open has come to an end. We only had two upsets on the mens side. No. 15 Mikhail Youzhny and No. 20 Alexander Dolgopolov did not make it past the second round. Djokovic, Tsonga, and Federer all advance in straight set wins. Looking at Day 5 - Chatrier will have Jelena Jankovic, Rafael Nadal, Richard Gasquet, and Ana Ivanovic. Lenglen will feature David Ferrer, American Alison Riske, Petra Kvitova, and Gael Monfils. Court 1 starts with Sloane Stephens, Andy Murray, and Simona Halep. Other matches to watch would be on Court 3 with Donald Young vs. No. 26 Feliciano Lopez, Court 5 with Coco Vandeweghe vs. No. 22 Ekaterina Makarova, Court 7 with Jack Sock vs. Steve Johnson, and Court 7 with the Bryan Brothers.
