Friday 2nd May – SAVING MR. BANKS (2013 – 125 minutes) Author P.L. Travers (Emma Thompson) reflects on her childhood after reluctantly agreeing to meet with Walt Disney (Tom Hanks) who is keen to adapt her Mary Poppins books for the big screen. When Disney’s daughters begged him to make a film of their favourite Mary Poppins stories, he didn’t realise it would take twenty years to fulfil the quest. He comes up against a curmudgeonly, uncompromising writer who has no intention of letting her beloved magical nanny get mauled by the Hollywood machine. But as sales of the books start to fall off and money is short, she reluctantly agrees to go to Los Angeles to hear of Disney’s plans. As he launches a charm offensive to win her round, she proves even less likely to agree, until he reaches into his own childhood and starts to win her round.
