Friendship with One Another John 15:12, 17 In John 15:10. Jesus told His disciples they would continue to abide in His love if they kept His commandments. Now, in verse twelve, He gives them an explicit commandment-they were to love one another. We must understand that love for our brethren (a commandment of God) is an integral part of a proper relationship with God. We cannot hate a fellow brother or sister in Christ and simultaneously claim to possess a proper relationship with our Savior (1 Jn.2:9-11). The Lord Jesus Christ stated in no uncertain terms that our fellowship with Him is contingent upon our obedience to Him, and obedience entails having a genuine love for our brethren. The love that Jesus commanded us to have for one another is not mere attachment or companionship. Rather, it is the same kind of love that He has for us! Such love demands sacrifice and humility (13:34-35). This love is selfless, for it always seeks the benefit of another. When we truly understand the extent of the love to which Jesus refers in verses twelve and seventeen, we will understand why genuine love is the greatest commandment and a theme that He continues to impress upon His disciples. If we truly love others, we will be selfless, humble, and kind ; yet, we will also admonish, warn, and look out for the well being of our brothers and sisters in Christ. A friendship based upon love does not necessarily mean we like everything about another person, nor does it mean we always tell them what they want to hear. Rather, it entails active concern for another and a desire for fellowship based upon the truth. Jesus Christ is the perfect example of genuine love. May we love fellow believers as He loves us. MDC
