From the Desk of: Eric Odom, Grassire Director of Interactive Media Dear Kory, On December 19, 2013, I saw a good, decent and God-fearing man come under intense fire for daring to speak his mind. While watching FOX News’ The Kelly File, I learned that Duck Dynasty patriarch Phil Robertson had been suspended indefinitely by powerhouse cable network A&E. In that instant, I knew that grassroots Americans would be outraged and would want a forum to respond. I quickly created the “We Stand With Phil Robertson” Facebook page and, with the help of the Grassfire team, launched the “I Back Phil” national petition. But honestly, no one could have predicted what happened next … Almost in the blink of an eye, people from all walks of life began “liking” the page. Within hours, phone lines, email inboxes and fax machines were under siege at A&E. The surge of incoming communication quickly became so intense, employees of the cable giant reportedly complained that the company was overwhelmed and had all but grounded to a halt. But that was just the leading edge of this epic, grassroots tsunami. Over the next several days, this deluge of activism continued to swell in both numbers and ferocity -- continuing through Christmas until Friday, December 27, when A&E announced it was lifting Robertson’s suspension and the show would continue. + + Shock And Awe From Grassroots Americans Millions of faith-filled Americans -- many who had never taken any kind of action before -- had suddenly sprung to life like Lazarus from the tomb, charging to the frontlines in defense of a man and his God-given right to speak freely. And miraculously, they won! If the Duck Dynasty flap proved anything, it’s that when pushed too far, faith-filled Americans will respond -- in the millions! Here’s what you did: • 3,000,000+ actively engaged with our “We Stand With Phil Robertson” campaign on Facebook • 1,500,000+ “liked” and joined our Facebook page • 800,000 visited our website • 411,000+ signed our national “I Back Phil” petition (Grassfire delivered those petitions to A&E executives in New York City and Duck Commander headquarters in West Monroe, Louisiana.) Additionally, you made phone calls, you faxed sponsors, and rallied others to fight alongside you. And most importantly, you won! This is what happens when Americans stand up for what is right. In this instance, millions of good and decent people stood up and prevented intolerance from triumphing, and I hope this trend continues.
