From the Rev. Deacon Larry Barnhill Reflection for 1 Feb. 2014 In looking at Matthew 22:15-40, how can you keep from trying to phrase questions in such a way that you might have grounds to accuse a person, based on his answer? This is what the Pharisees, Sadducees, and the teachers of the Law tried to do with Jesus while he was physically here on earth. This type of attitude can also turn us into dust inspectors. We can become so caught up in trying to find something to use to accuse someone that we neglect our own faults, sins, and shortcomings. This is not God’s will for us. God wants us to love one another, encourage one another, and to help others feel the need to repent. He does not want us to force someone to repent or to have as our focus the overwhelming desire to accuse someone and harass them into repentance. This leads to people coming to the altar out of a sense of fear and duty, and not from a humble, contrite, willing heart. Therefore as you spend time in prayer today, focus upon what it is that you are doing and how you interact with others. May you be spending the time in your relationships to build up the body of Christ.
