From what we could ascertain from the National Salaries, Wages and Income Commission, the highest salary a Nigerian doctor (not private practice) could earn is about N5 Million/Year. That means that the N33 Billion allocated to the Presidency alone could fund the salaries of close to 6,500 doctors. The N150 billion allocated to the 469 members of the National Assembly would be able to employ and fully pay 29,250 doctors. Now, if we suddenly decided to double their salary, because doctors are viewed as more valuable than politicians, the N183 Billion that Nigeria spends on the minimally effective National Assembly and Presidency would comfortably pay 17,842 doctors a whopping N10 Million/Year each. Which is about $64,000/Year. Now do you understand what the doctors are fighting for? The President gets his hazard pay and still will not go to the “eye of the Boko Haram storm” – Chibok for fear of his life. Why should he expects doctors who get nothing compared to what he gets to put their lives at risk in the name of national interest? Perhaps is it because they have no good examples to follow. How difficult is it to grant the doctors the proper compensation that they deserve? Instead he sacks them. thenewsnigeria.ng/2014/08/14/ebolavirus-nigeria-sacks-all-resident-doctors/
