PETA Action Alert Dear Carol, white tail deer nature Georgia residents report that the Jekyll Island Authority is considering having deer gunned down in hopes of controlling island populations. But if the deer are killed, the resultant sudden spike in the food supply will prompt survivors to breed at an accelerated rate—does will start birthing twins and triplets! Deer numbers will therefore increase, as would rates of starvation while herds struggle to re-establish a natural balance. Furthermore, animals who are shot often dont die outright; wounded deer commonly disappear only to succumb unseen to their injuries or die from extreme stress or in attacks by other animals. Deer are beneficial to island ecosystems because they distribute key nutrients. But if population control is insisted upon, then officials must manage vegetation in riparian areas, ban wildlife feeding and the planting of exotic flowers (which deer love to eat), employ immunocontraception/sterilization procedures, and consider installing wildlife tunnels in order to allow deer access to the mainland. Please politely urge the Jekyll Island Authority to oppose the killing of deer—then forward this e-mail widely!
