GCSD Incorporates iPads and Laptops into Classrooms In a movement toward increasing the use and availability of technology as a teaching and learning tool, the school district has already purchased iPads for grades K-2, as well as laptops carts for 4th grade at TES and 5th grade at BES. In addition, the district has developed and submitted a plan for a $270,000 Digital Classroom allocation to be used to further advance the technology initiatives currently in place within the schools. With this new allocation, the district plans to provide additional laptop carts through 8th grade at both Trenton and Bell. The district is also investigating the opportunity to provide digital devices in a 1:1 ratio for students in 9th grade. This device would be assigned to the student for the duration of their time through graduation. The plan was collaboratively developed with input from representative groups of stakeholders. “We believe that the use of technology as a part of the curriculum should focus on supporting higher level learning, problem-solving, critical thinking skills, and collaboration,” says Superintendent Robert Rankin. Training for teachers will be provided through a $75,000 Professional Development for Digital Learning grant. “It is important not only that technology is available, but also that our teachers are experts in how best to use these types of tools to deliver and differentiate instruction for all types of learners,” explains Superintendent Rankin. The plan has been submitted prior to the October 1 state deadline, in a hope that approval will quickly follow. Once approved, the district will move forward with implementing this plan. Please watch for more information as we work through this implementation.
