Genl Gerrit Murphy het my nou net ingelig dat Lt Gen Gert Boshoff gister (21 Oktober) oorlede is in Centurion by sy dogter. Genl Boshoff was ‘n voormalige Direkteur Sein (Jan 1968 – Des 1972) en ook Hoof van Leerstaf Logistiek en Hoof van Staf Personeel (1980 to 1981). Groete Walter BOSHOFF, GERT Johannes Jacobus: SSAS SD SM 01214683PE (b. 28 Apr 1931 in Benoni, Transvaal) Lt Gen BOSHOFF, Brig GJJ 2Gert Boshoff passed his St VIII in 1946 at the Barberton High School in eastern Transvaal. He then selected the Post Office as his chosen career path and subsequently completed his Matric at the Pretoria Technical College in 1948 by means of evening classes. In 1950 he started working for the City Council of Pretoria, and also joined the Citizen Force where he became part of 6 Signal Squadron. Over the years he progressed to Staff Sergeant in the CF. On 2 Jan 1954 he accepted a short service (Afr: kortdiens) commission (2nd Lt) in the Permanent Force - SACS. He served in the School of Signals, and during this time was one of the main motivators behind the establishment of 1 Signal Regiment. During 1960 he completed the General Staff Services Course (Afr: algemene stafdienskursus). Promoted to Major on 1 Apr 1962. Appointed acting OC DHQ Sig Sqn (19 Jan 63 – 30 Mar 63).From 1965 to 1966 he was appointed as instructor at the General Services Branch of the SA Army College in Voortrekkerhoogte (Maj). He was then appointed as Director Signals at Army HQ (26 Jan 1968 – 31 Dec 1972) with the rank of Colonel, and then promoted to Brigadier wef 1 Nov 1968. On 4 Dec 1972 he was appointed OC NW Command. On 1 Dec 1974 he was promoted to the rank of Maj Gen and appointed Chief of Army Staff Logistics. Over and above his normal duties he was appointed Acting C Army during various periods (3 – 7 May 76; 23 Feb – 5 Mar 77; 1 – 3 Aug 77; 5 – 18 Dec 77);wef 1 Jan 1979 he was appointed Deputy CSP and on 1 Dec 1979 he was promoted to the rank of Lt Gen. His last appointment in the SADF was Chief of Staff Personnel (CS1) (Lt Gen) (01 Jan 1980 – 31 Jan 1981). A summary of his promotions is as follows: 2Lt (21 Jan 1954 - 20 Feb 1956); Lt (20 Feb 1956 - 1 Dec 1958); Capt (1 Dec 1958 - 1 Apr 1962); Maj (1 Apr 1962 - 1 Jul 1966); Cmdt (1 Jul 1966 - 1 Jan 1968); Col (1 Jan 1968 - 1 Nov 1968); Brig (l Nov 1968 – 1 Dec 1974); Maj Gen (1 Dec 1974 – 1 Dec 1979); Lt Gen (01 Dec 1979 – 31 Jan 1981). Orders, decorations and medals include: SSAS; Southern Cross medal (SD SM) (1971); Good Service Medal PF (1972); Good Service Medal (Bronze, Silver). Lt Gen Boshoff married Miss P.C. Jordaan from Boksburg and they have been blessed with five children, of whom one was sadly killed in a school bus accident.
