Gippslanders have been urged to be on alert as severe fire conditions ramp up in this extreme weather. Around 30 fires are currently out of control right across the region and the situation is expected to worsen this afternoon. Locals are urged to stay informed and actively seek further information about the fire situation. There is also the potential that the Princes Highway, east of Orbost, could close this afternoon due to the expected fire behaviour that could impact the road. For information on fires in Victoria and general fire safety, please contact the Victorian Bushfire Information Line (VBIL) on freecall 1800 240 667. Callers who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have a speech / communication impairment may contact VBIL via the National Relay Service on 1800 555 677. People should also tune in to their emergency broadcasters: ABC Local Radio, commercial radio and designated community radio stations or SKY NEWS Television.
