The first time he laid eyes on Clara Hendrix eight years ago she’d been a dirty, terrified, waif holding a pistol in her shaking hands. Holed up in the small market her parents owned, she managed to stay safe and under the radar, for the first three months after the world set fire. The minute they spotted the woman child their hearts had been stolen, and their purpose in life discovered. The world had shifted swiftly as groups came to power. What women hadn’t perished soon found themselves under the control of the many men out to reintroduce the nineteen fifties. After coaxing her to lower the gun, they convinced her they were friends and she’d always been safe. That night as she slept they made a vow to take care of her. In the midst of the darkness, she became the light they held sacred. A living breathing unicorn, she gave them a reason to continue a million times over. Their bond had been forged in the fires of the old world. It wasn’t a link he needed to mess with.
