Goal: Cancel the cruel Calgary Stampede Chuckwagon race permanently The Calgary Stampede is an annual rodeo, exhibition, and festival held in Alberta, Canada. The event holds the Chuckwagon horse race in which teams of horses pull wagons around a track at a very high speed. These races have been deadly for many horses involved, and a lot of them end up with severe injuries like fractured legs and broken backs, sometimes even suffering a heart attack. Despite the gruesome statistics of animal cruelty during the event, riders vehemently oppose any regulations to tighten the rules; therefore it is best if the event gets cancelled altogether. The Calgary Stampede’s deadly races have been held since 1923. There has been a growing concern with the welfare of the animals involved ever since; however, no action has been taken to protect the animals. Many argue that the Chuckwagon race may even be illegal because of Alberta’s Animal Protection Act that prohibits causing animals distress. It defines an animal in distress as one that is “abused or subjected to undue hardship, privation or neglect.” Horses that are used in these races definitely suffer hardship; therefore, these races are against the law. Some of the injuries incurred are caused by violent crashes between the wagons. The incidents often cause fractured legs, broken backs and serious cuts. During crashes many horses get run over by other wagons or get stepped on by other horses. Often the injuries are so crippling that the horses must be euthanized. Over 50 horses have already died during the event since 1986. Sign this petition to urge the Premier of Alberta, Alison Redford, to ban the Chuckwagon race permanently and out an end to annual animal cruelty. Not only is this practice breaking the law, it is a gruesome form of entertainment done at the expense of innocent lives lost every year.
