Good Morning FB friends...it is Tuesday morning....ELECTION DAY.....I have already voted but if you did not vote early be a responsible citizen and get out and vote regardless of whom you vote for. This may be an off year election but it is an important election to vote because many decisions will be made. WV became a State on June 20, 1863, and broke away from the Commonwealth of Virginia which had seceded from the Union to become part of the Confederacy. in 1863 the new State of WV was controlled by the Republicans who disenfranchised citizens from voting or holding office who could not take an oath of loyalty to the Union and those who served in the Confederacy. In 1870 the Democrats won control of government and called for a new Constitutional Convention which was held at a Methodist Church in Charleston, WV, and the disenfranchisement was removed from the Constitution and previous officer holder such as James William Franklin Allen were elected but into office, and he was elected Judge and served until his death in 1875. The Democrats would control government until 1890 and then the Republicans would regain control and control government in WV and would remain in control until 1930 and the working class people and blacks would abandon the Republican party in large numbers and support the new President Franklin Roosevelt and his New Deal and the Democrats have controlled government in WV every since.....a period of 83 years. WV remains a blue state ...Democrat...but in national elections has voted Republican since 1980. The Republican party has been making gains in the legislature but both houses remain in control by the democrats. Hardy County has a history of sending strong leaders to Charleston that get things done. My father, Ralph J. Bean, was elected to the State Senate in 1942 and in 1953 he was chosen by the democratic Senators to be President of the State Senate and he became known as the man with the booming voice, and he served as President until 1960 and in 1960 he ran for governor but later with drew because he had five young children and he knew that in order to have the money to get elected governor he would have to sell his soul to the coal barons and he was not willing to do so. He would see to it that his children were college educated, and while he was in politics he was well respected and brought lots of good things to our County and District. In the 70s a young lawyer named Clyde See, Jr would get elected to the House of Delegates and in 1984, he would be chosen to be Speaker of the House of Delegates and later he would run for Governor twice and be defeated but in close elections. He too brought lots of good things to our County and District. In 1988, Harold Michael would be elected to the House of Delegates and remain for 26 years and he would be appointed to the Chairmanship of the powerful Finance Committee and he saw to it that Hardy County and his District and the Eastern Panhandle would receive their fair share of appropriations that would led to a large expansion of programs in Hardy County including the DMV, Wellness Center, Eastern Community College, Armory, just to name a few. Yes, Hardy County has a history of sending strong leaders, and we have a new leader in Charleston from our District named Isaac Sponaugle. He is a lawyer and he is young and full of engery. He loves politics and he has an out going personalty and is a moderate who can work on both sides of the isle and he will work in Charleston to get things done and bring money to our area and I think he will move up in his committee positions to become powerful in WV politics and we again will be able to say we have another great leader from our area.
