TOWSON, Md.(5/23/14) -- Tewaaraton Award finalists Alyssa Murray and Kayla Treanor combined for 16 points to lead No. 2 Syracuse to a 16-8 victory against Virginia in the semifinals of the NCAA Womens Lacrosse Championship. The Orange will make its second appearance in the national championship game on Sunday, May 25 at 8:30 p.m. where it will face No. 1 Maryland. It was a historic night for both Murray and Treanor. Murray scored six goals, the most for a Syracuse player in an NCAA Tournament game, while Treanor had four, giving her a single-season school record total of 77 in 2014. The Orange (21-2) jumped out to an early lead when Treanor found the back of the net 55 seconds into the contest. She then assisted on goals by junior Kailah Kempney and Murray. Kelly Boyd put Virginia (12-9) on the scoreboard at the 19:28 mark before Murray sparked the Orange on another 3-0 scoring run. She scored twice and assisted on seniorAmy Cross goal to extend Syracuses lead to 6-1 at the 6:28 mark. Boyd netted her second goal to briefly halt Syracuses offensive outburst, but the Orange scored four of the final five goals of the half to take a 9-3 lead at intermission. SeniorKatie Webster scored on a hard shot before Treanor fed Cross for her second goal of the day. Virginia turned the ball over on a clear attempt and Murray took advantage, scoring her fourth goal of the half with 15 seconds remaining on an assist from junior Gabby Jaquith. Treanor started the second half much like the first, scoring two of the first three goals after halftime. The first goal came on an assist from Murray and the second on a free position, which was her 76th of the year to break the single-season school record for goals. Maddy Keeshan netted back-to-back goals to cut Syracuses lead to 11-5, but that was close as the Cavaliers would get. Murray got by two Cavalier defenders and put her shot in the back of the net and sparked the Orange on a 5-0 scoring run that gave Syracuse its largest lead of the night at 16-6 with 3:16 to play. Murray scored twice during the run, while Treanor, Kempney and Devon Collins also tallied goals. The Cavaliers scored twice during the final 1:45 for the 16-8 final. I thought it was a great effort on our part, said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. I thought our focus was very good from the opening whistle. The execution was exceptional and we stuck to our game plan. We adapted to the way they were playing defense. The stats may show that Kayla and Alyssa scored most of the goals, but its the way they played defense. It was the first team weve played in a long time that didnt sag or double quickly. When they do that, our big-time players stood up and took advantage of it. Our team understood it, took advantage of it and had a great team effort. Were looking forward to Sunday. Murray finished with six goals and three assists, while Treanor had four goals and three assists. Syracuses offense dominated, registering 30 shots on goal to just 19 for the Cavaliers. The Orange picked up 20 ground balls compared to six for Virginia. Syracuse held a slight edge in the circle, winning 13-of-25 draw controls. Senior Alyssa Costantinostarted in goal for the Orange and recorded four saves, while junior Kelsey Richardsonhad one save after intermission. Liz Colgan finished with eight saves for Virginia. The Orange will play for the first national championship in program history as well as the first for a womens sport at Syracuse on Sunday. Opening draw is set for 8:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
