Her Royal Highness Best Kemigisa akiiki, the Queen Mother of Toro Kingdom has been bestowed with the 2014 Mkiva Humanitarian Award for her outstanding contribution in the empowerment of women in Africa, especially in rural areas. The Executive Mayor of Amathole District Municipality, Cllr Nomasikizi Konza conducted the honours of presenting the award to the Queen Mother of Toro Kingdom and declared Her as the Champion of Women’s Development in Africa. The event of the awards was organized under the stewardship of His Royal Heritage, Prince Zolani Mkiva who serves as the Chairman of Imbongi Yesizwe Trust and President of the Mkiva Humanitarian Foundation. Other recipients who attended and graced the ceremony of the 2014 Mkiva Humanitarian Awards are: • Dr Saeb Erakat, Minister and Chief Negotiator of the State of Palestine. Minister Erakat received an International award entitled “Champion of the People’s Freedom”, for his outstanding contribution to the liberation struggle of the people of Palestine and the world over. He was being saluted and honoured for his continuing efforts of fighting for freedom in Palestine and peace in the Middle East. The other highest recipient of the accolades include • Honourable Jidi Majia, Vice Governor of the Qinghai Province in China. Hon. Majia is an international acclaimed Chinese writer, cultural activist, heritage practitioner and senior government official. He serves as the Chairperson of the National Cultural Association of China. Jidi Majia is also a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party in Qinghai Province. Jidi was thus honoured as the “Champion of People’s Culture”. The 2014 Edition of the Mkiva Humanitarian Awards Ceremony took place in Butterworth, in the Eastern Cape Province.
