Here is a little back round on where this idea came from and where we hope to go. My name is Matthew Wolf. I am currently a Paramedic Driver with a NM Fire Dept. I am also the director of NM Firefighter Charities. I started this organization to help provide immediate funds to our brothers and sisters that are facing hardships. When they themselves or family members are diagnosed with serious illnesses or experience injuries or loss, they are reluctant to ask for help. Costs associated with co-pays, travel expenses, inability to work can add unwanted stress to an already stressful time. You know, as well as I do, as firefighters we know how to put everyone elses needs before our own and as a result dont recognize when we need help. In the past couple of years, we have experienced over a dozen such instances. Previous practice was to pass the boot around the stations, but with some many firefighters and their families going through rough times, that method didnt provide equal opportunity of support for those second, third, and fourth cases. I was one of these firefighters. I received a lot of help and support to get through my diagnosis, surgery and recovery. Not everyone was as lucky. Seeing first hand the financial limitations of passing the boot, I decided to give something back, thus created NM Firefighter Charities. I want everyone to receive assistance based on their need, not the timing of it. I know that this problem isnt unique to just the Albuquerque area. Dont let the name mislead you. I want to be able to help firefighters and their families across the country. Here is where I need help. I am trying to find support/sponsors to help establish a decent fund to begin disbursements. This organization is very young (still in the IRS non-profit application process) and need a little networking, and exposure to get a jump start to success. I know that there are tens of thousands, Ive been looking, of organizations trying to better their cause. I feel strongly that this can be a successful en devour that would benefit thousands of firefighters and their families. Thank you for your time.
