How I got to this moment... The challenges of turning the impossible into my next job.... (in a writing mood tonight... Pretty excited I guess) Ill be honest. Next to my dream of doing weather on TV, and then being ousted from my dream job, I just knew I was done. No more weather. No more broadcasting. DUNZO. Then for no reason one day a crazy thought popped in my head. I had sent out hundreds of tapes to other stations, gone to interview after interview each time seeing my hopes crumble. Then I was simply joking w a friend and for some reason said one of my random thoughts out loud You know what? If the stations dont want me, why in the world do I want them??? And where is it written that broadcast meteorologists can only work for them? (keep in mind this was in 2007). Still not taking myself seriously, I said I should stop wasting my time with this game of TV. I should CHANGE THE game altogether. COULD I change the game? To be fair, there are some excellent writers, forecasters and bloggers out there. But I wanted to keep a news broadcast quality to my idea. Just without micromanagement, consultants, sharing time with news and sports... No offense to my TV friends. Thats when I got the idea of a local Internet only weather channel. Not an information board or bottom box... A REAL Channel. Just weather. Simple forecasts, technical discussions, bring it on. I thought of what equipment I would need, the logistics, would anyone watch streaming content? Remember its 2007. Maybe I would win the lottery or find a buried treasure. Just a dream. Then came Facebook. Yeah, big deal. Oh wait... This is getting huge and fast. Great for checking on your friends on a desktop computer at home or college. Whats that? Well, hello WIFI! Soon tablets and laptops joined in. And as folding, simple cell phones suddenly became smart...and everyone from teenagers to parents to grandparents upgraded their phones, it wasnt long before we all were at the mercy of a new age where the Internet is as easy as dialing in a radio station out of thin air... Almost every electronic has built-in apps or computers... So in just 7 years what was an ordinary thought was suddenly real. GET THIS: TRUE STORY: I once tracked how any people had viewed a post I wrote online. (yes you can find all of this info out, btw). Of the hundreds reading the story, 35% were on a laptop or. Desktop computer. ***65% were on their mobile device of choice. But still.... How to stream? To make the product professional looking I needed money. Lots of it. Cameras, computers, servers, fast Internet lots of weather data. Ahhhhh, but thats the beauty of technology. No server? Not a problem any longer! Websites handle that now. Wow. From the beginning, streaming video was just that. A station would produce video for TV, then it would be converted to a stream. So I decided that I would still try my best at buying professional TV production equipment and maybe in ten years be ready to try this out. I was broke and starting to give up. Not so fast, Jamey. Now there is equipment that has all the bells and whistles with it, only its not meant to be used for TV. It is meant solely for streaming video. Just when I least expected it. And guess what. I have been blessed with donations and an investor who for now wishes to remain anonymous.... I can afford this technology. Not the try me at home, its fun` this is the real deal. And its all thanks to YOU ALL! Do you miss weather on the Weather Channel? Me too. Notice how some streams from the TV folks are short or simply taken from an earlier newscast? That is not the goal of Jameys Web Weather. I will have short segments but I will also take time to explore and explain the forecast for you. During severe weather, we plan to be on all of the time. This will eventually grow into a 24/7 channel only with more updates and details. Facebook posts will continue. But there will be a one stop shop for all of my forecasts, reports, maps, and LIVE streaming. Honestly its as if the folks building this new technology had read my mind because they have thought of everything. EVERYTHING. All free. All local. So thanks for believing in me. You can chat with me, leave pics, comments, tweets, you can easily Skype LIVE from your location to the rest of the world. Thanks again everyone. Its time I made weather exciting again. With tools so new one has used them for weather. Ill hope you will join me as we write a new chapter in broadcast history. What an honor. Ive missed you. The STREAM Ive been DREAMING about... and the DREAM Ill be STREAMING about. ☺ Jamey
