How To Operate a Citronella Collar We promote +R (positive reinforcement) methods but there are times where a dog in foster care is barking, and we need an immediate hand to stop the barking while we enact a longer lasting behaviour modification program to get the dog back on track. That would be primarily barking. Citronella collars are safe and harmless, however they are not a +R tool and we do not use them except as a last resort (where the foster/adoptor cant wait for quiet til weve gotten a handle on the behaviour). Citronella collars do NOT replace training and handling changes that actually correct the problem - and shouldnt be considered the way you fix barking. There is also the option of unscented spray so its just a startle. That said, we do on occasion have situations where we will use Citronella collars, and this is a video showing how to operate one.
