‘…How thou pleasest, God, dispose the day!’ So Shakespeare - TopicsExpress

‘…How thou pleasest, God, dispose the day!’ So Shakespeare has Henry V, King of England, paraphrase the prayer, ‘Thy will be done,’ moments before a battle against overwhelming odds. Today is St Crispin’s Day, as it was when that battle was fought. Almost every 25th of October Cindy and I try to make time to watch Kenneth Branaghs extraordinary film adaptation, which marked the turning point in my quest to ‘get’ Shakespeare’s language and poetry. Ive no love of war and I have VERY serious doubts as to the justice of King Harrys cause in his march on France; but it takes a harder heart than mine to remain unmoved by his speech on the threshold of battle.
