How to Choose the Right Company to Work For The success of a job interview depends on your ability to sell yourself to the hiring manager. At the same time, the company and interviewer must also persuade you of the merits of the job. Before accepting an offer, it is important to consider whether the company and position are the right fit for your talents, interests and personal values. Let’s say you’ve been offered jobs by two different organizations. Both jobs offer appealing future prospects. But the salary packages are different, the first job provides better basic with very attractive benefits, while the other only a basic package without the attractive benefits. Which one do you take? The tendency by candidates would be to snap up the job that offered the better salary package, but BEWARE! Decisions based purely on financial considerations are not necessarily the wisest. Many candidates have discovered this to their detriment. In fact, the key reason for employees leaving organizations has little to do with salary dissatisfaction and is more about an incompatibility in goals, indicating a huge shift in the reasons behind people changing jobs. Money is no longer the key determinant. Issues such as a motivational work environment, a compatible work culture, an appropriate work / life balance, and chemistry with your superiors are more important than money. Company Direction It’s essential that you find out where the organization is heading. What are its goals and aspirations? What sets it apart from its competitors? Joining an organization that has no viable growth strategy is a “death sentence”. Unfortunately, these organizations are awful places to work for – morale is low, direction changes by the minute, and meanness and tightness replace prudent cost management. The Leadership Quality leaders not only have the strength of character to make the tough decisions but they also inspire their staff. They are prepared to “walk the talk” and win the hearts of employees. At the end of the day, they make others want to follow them. Company Culture, Environment & People Your superior, team, and the colleagues that will surround you every day more than 8 hours a day are crucial for your happiness and success at a job. Of course it’s hard to judge a person during that 1 or 2 hours of interview session. But how they treated you during the interview session. Were they friendly? The questions they asked and how they asked the questions? Do you have the chemistry with them? That’s important! We recently came across a candidate, who has a concern on the chemistry with the hiring manager and she wasn’t comfortable with the hiring manager after she met the person during the interview session. But she said this to us, if the company can offer her more than her expected salary, she will accept the offer even though she knows it will be quite tough to work with the boss. It is an absolutely WRONG DECISION!!! Weigh the pros and cons of working for a corporation, an agency, a non-profit, or a startup. They’re very much different environments, and it’s important to decide which you would thrive in. If you are more of an individual worker who likes structure and competition, the corporate path may be for you. If you want a fast-paced environment that’s new every day, an agency or startup may be a good choice. Development & Career Path One of the most frustrating experiences any employee can have is feeling under-utilized and directionless. This can be the major cause of resignations and of staff being snapped up by the competitors. Is the company provides training and personal development for the career growth? What is your career path if you decided to grow with the company? Company Industry Is this the industry for your long-term career plan? Think before you decide. Always choose the right industry that can add-value to your long-term career plant. So, put aside the salary package (although I know, salary is part of the motivation factor) and think it seriously before you make a RIGHT choice!
