I avoid politics on FB so pardon me if this comes close: I have a friend who is a firefighter, plus I listen to police/fire/EMS radio dispatches on a live feed. It keeps me aware of of two things: 1.) If you wreck your car, have a heart attack, get robbed, raped or attacked -- if your house is on fire, or your child is missing - nobody asks whether you are a good guy or a bad guy, a Democrat or Republican, rich or poor. They arrive at high speed with lights flashing, walk into dangerous situations and try to save you. 2.) Every dispatch tells the beginning of a story, and makes me wonder how it ends. When they bust the meth lab, where do they take the children? When the elderly woman with dementia falls and breaks a hip, who cares for her? When theres yet another domestic violence call, when officers arrive in time to stop a suicide or pick up someone with severe mental illness, what happens next? On Tuesday I will vote for social services, because I will gladly spend taxes on the money I earn for anything that supports the threatened and lost. And I will support first responders, people who are there when you dial 9-1-1, and see -- every day -- danger, human suffering and horrors the rest of us dont like to think about.
