I cant draw to save my life. I remember sitting next to Ward - TopicsExpress

I cant draw to save my life. I remember sitting next to Ward Jenkins in math class, both of us sketching Prince (this was during the height of his Purple Reign). The lines were the same, the pose was the same, but where my portrait lay flat on the page Wards just sang with life. I dont draw anymore but I appreciate a good eye, and David Apatoff has it. Heres his take on Joe de Mer and how a simple portrait of a womans hair isnt so simple: Note the bold palette and abstract brushwork in the womans hair. Note the wild difference in hue between the shadows beside her nose and in her nostril; this is an artist who knows what he is doing. Well, hell yeah. Now I want to go shoot some hair. Which is what the best criticism can do: help you spot a detail youd otherwise overlook and inspire you to create something new.
