I just had a very interesting discussion with my workmates on how English was taught in primary school in their day. One had us all on the floor when she described how words like Knife and Kneel ( kynife, kyneel ) were pronounced. With a Kikuyu accent of course. Isnt it crazy how the syllabus is insistent on proper pronunciation these days? At least in high school, that is. It is no longer just about communication. Diphthongs must be learnt and I know I learnt phonetics in college, not high school!
