I know a lot of people who are musicians, so heres a question for them: What makes music go from satisfying and pleasant to unsettling and tense? Im thinking in particular of the scoring for horror films, but this is a more general question as well. The obvious answer is dissonance, but not all dissonance feels terrifying. Tri-tones hurt my ears, but not always in a profoundly psychologically way. Extra points if you know of any classical/contemporary musicians who dealt in horror in the same fashion that Stephen King or Edgar Allen Poe or H.P. Lovecraft did in prose.
