I know this article will speak to a lot of folks that have expressed these sentiments before, and I agree with them for the most part. The City of Tallahassee proper is the owner and manager of many of the best trails in our area, and arguably the state. It is imperative, as a public agency, that a leader and someone that understands these very concepts is put in charge of managing our trails. A good trail and land manager will not maintain for the sake of maintaining, burn money and labor on unnecessary or unwarranted projects. They arent ballfields, they arent cemetery grounds, or sidewalks. They require highly specialized management, skill and nurturing to provide a unique wilderness experience while impacting the local environment to a minimal degree. A good manager will funnel money, labor and maintenance into work that enhances the quality and value of the trail system at every opportunity. Efforts that will attract visitors, garner publicity and bolster public and volunteer participation, all the while making sure the trails are sustainable in nature, challenging, and possessing a logical element of safety. Mountain biking and trail running is inherently dangerous. But, paving them, neutering them of roots and bumps, widening them and reducing them to mere roads is not a path to success or safety. Our trails cannot be put in the hands of people that dont understand, nor care, about the best interests of the trails, users and public. The post-Chuck era is uncertain, lets hope the City gets it right for round 2. bikemag/news/web-monkey-speaks-unwarranted-trail-maintenance/?sm_id=social_20140929_32480026
