I learned a lot about life when I worked in Nursing. I learned - TopicsExpress

I learned a lot about life when I worked in Nursing. I learned that you cannot save them all which is always a hard life lesson to come to grips with. I have been limiting my exposure to rescue work related issues and networking sites for a few months now. I call it my mental barrier to keep my sanity intact. I walk away, sign off, and unplug so that I can decompress and come to terms with some of the awful things I see and some of the really sad stories I hear. But not everyone has those healthy boundaries of knowing when enough is enough. I like the point she made about taking care of yourself first. As Women and yes some men suffer from this as well we dont value ourselves or our gifts near enough (I say women because more women are involved in rescue than men and that is a statistical fact). I have noticed of late a rash of suicides within the rescue community. A foster mom went off the deep end and took all of her fur kids with her when she ended her life. A rescue person felt that life was no longer worth living and ended it. And now a trainer has died as well at her own hand. I know suicide happens in all areas and walks of life. But I think as rescue workers we often allow ourselves to get overwhelmed with some of the horrible things we face day in day out. We dont take that time we need to simply walk away and create a safe haven for our families and our ourselves. There is no crime in taking a breather, and there is no shame in thinking about your own mental health before the needs of so many furry kids out there who need help. I am not saying stop rescuing I am simply saying learn some healthy boundaries. I dont want to lose any more people close to me or that work with me to suicide. You are not alone. There are others out here who are willing to lend an ear if you need to talk, who are willing to lend a shoulder if you need to cry and who are willing to just be there if you need someone to vent to. Please please please read this if you are involved in rescue heavily, if you foster animals, volunteer with rescues or shelters, or if you living a high stress life. Life is to precious to give up on it. It does get better. Pick your battles, learn to walk away, and for gods sake reach out to someone if you are having thoughts of ending your own life. jessicadolce/depression-suicide-animal-care-professions/
