I reshape my artist statement every year. Part of it is a re-evaluation and clarification for myself of what it is I really care about. Another part is attempting to peel away at the jargon, so that you dont need an MFA to understand what the hell Im talking about. Here is 2015: As an artist, I feel a great responsibility to intercept cultural sleep-walking and stimulate something of a kind of social bowel movement. I choose subjects based on an emotional or experiential response I have to it. I approach each subject as sincerely as I can with an ultimate aim to transcend emotion or provoke a direct emotional-visceral experience via the painted image. I like to think of my paintings as re-presentations of contemporary culture. My work critically and imaginatively investigates and points-out social ideas and values that contemporary culture(s) cling to despite a passive underlying knowledge that the ideas no longer make sense, are unfair, go against our long term happiness and the good of the people in each relevant community. I use an especially colorful and painterly approach to realism. I work large and small, and most often use a very unique pastel-painting process, other times aquarelles and collage.
