I saw a post this morning in the canning group that I am a member. Last year I had a brief conversation on the topic of jars with a staff member at UGA Food Sciences. The rule of thumb is with care, your branded mason jar can be re-used for up to 40 times and your economy mason (or mayo jar) can only be used safely for up to 5 times. With either jar, take care not to used metal utensils to scrap the jar or store anything that may nick the jar inside. These slight nicks can and will cause small stress fractures in the jar which increases the chance of jar failure....here is a good go-to article for this information.nchfp.uga.edu/how/general/recomm_jars_lids.html
