I saw the comment on another thread concerning the distortion of religious values, specifically that Jesus must be shaking his head at what weve done with Christianity. This isnt an argument for the existence of an historical Jesus, all right? It is a comment about the nature of human beings and their insights and institutions. My answer was: I doubt seriously Jesus is shaking his head that we got it wrong. To do that, hed have to have been seriously ignorant about human nature, not the paragon of wisdom Christians believe him to have been. There is nothing at all unusual about teachings being corrupted and watered-down after the originator dies. While he is alive, he is like a tree, and followers can pluck the fruit and eat. As soon as hes dead, people cut the tree down and build a church. Thats because the followers havent the same vision as the originator. If they did, theyd create their own thing. By definition, anyone following a prescribed path has less vision than the one who created it, IMHO
