I think all this hubbub surrounding Oktoberfest in Malaysia is a really just a marketing and perception issue. The Japanese Bon Odori and Scottish Highland Games in this country are advertised as family friendly events and one will find many activities and foreign food thats permissible for observant Muslims to partake in. Oktoberfest in Malaysia, on the other hand, is publicised as almost purely a beer-binge-drinking and pork-sausage-eating event, which excludes half the population. Im not saying that the organizers (who are mainly F&B outlets out to maximise their sale of Löwenbräu) should do away with German beer and pork bratwurst as that is a significant part of Bavarian culture but organize and publicize other Oktoberfesty events which are Islamically permissible for Muslims to participate. Then everyone gets to appreciate German traditions and München-style amusements. Until then, well always have a misunderstanding within the general Muslim community that Oktoberfest is ONLY about booze served by pairs of boobs in Dirndl dresses. Of course, you wont be able to sway some people, but you will always find people who are uncomfortable with foreign cultures anywhere. If the argument goes that it changes the spirit and feel of Oktoberfest, then these traditionalists are as inflexible as the guys calling for a ban. #sayingallthisbecauseiwanttoeathalalbeefbratwurstoneday
