I think for a lot of people there is a sort of progression to the process of self-actualization, where first accepting themselves as they are is essential before moving beyond can happen. Most of us have accumulated a lifetimes worth of junk barring the door that leads to freedom. And we want to soar past our limited selves without looking at how we ourselves ARE the limiting mechanism. Many people want to transcend who theyve come to believe they are without examining those beliefs and the associated traumas and wounds. So they become one of those seekers using positive affirmations, ritual, ceremony, religion, and spirituality to try to escape their negative beliefs about themselves. For some, it might seem to be working, and they might seem peaceful and even joyful on the surface. But scratch that surface, and there is a broken heart they have never really allowed themselves to feel. It doesnt work. The broken heart is blocking the door to self-actualization. It must be faced, felt, embraced, allowed. Honesty, combined with compassion, moves mountains. Only after reunification with the broken heart can re-integration begin: the reunion of the inner family, all the shamed pieces of self that have been hiding themselves in the cellar since childhood or adolescence. Only then, at peace with who we are, comfortable with all of the discomforts of being human, can we freely fly free of that, testing the boundaries of old beliefs, exploring for the fountainhead of full potential. Too many seekers want to skip the painful step of true truth-telling. What they end up with in so doing is worshiping at the altars of new age religions. Unfortunately, replacing negative beliefs with positive ones will only get them so far. If their purpose is to truly wake up from the dream (or even to wake up IN the dream), they will have to stop trying to transcend themselves long enough to examine who it is they are so afraid they are. They will have to face all of their fears and shame, dismantling the pile of skeletons thats blocking the door. Most people anyway.
