I wonder where this maid thing ends, but while the biggest - TopicsExpress

I wonder where this maid thing ends, but while the biggest beneficiaries are the kids who are silently tortured, the maids seem to have lost a lot of ground. There is likely to be a lot of collateral damage though: 1. If households defer to the almighty nanny-cam, how many hardworking maids - maids who care for our babies sometimes more than their mothers - are now going to experience hours and hours of being watched without their consent? A friend of mine has already installed the nanny-cam. She says in the evenings she plays back the big-brother reality tape. I wonder what she sees beyond the usual household happenings. ALL OF US have things we do in private that others, NOT EVEN OUR SPOUSES see. For example me: I like inspecting the progress of my thigh muscles, my 3 1/2-pack abdominal muscles (for some weird reason Ive failed to make a 6 pack - sometimes I even dance in my mother nature outfit like in the bath-room thanking God for being me (Kind David did this in public when he was happy). Now, imagine the child is asleep, and the maid has a private moment of introspection as she inspects herself to ensure she is anatomically OK, how much voyeurism is going to go on behind closed cameras? And who will do the audit views - the men or the women? And do they have a right to inspect peoples private moments? Even the yawn I do in public is a doctored one - there is one I do when I am not being seen - and it is exactly for that reason - I am not being seen. Because of mans curiosity, every human being peeps into things that do not concern them when the moment presents - however brief. How moral are the people who will be doing these audit reviews of the days videos? Some naive workmate said it is my house and she is not allowed to do private things in it - well, as long as she stays under your roof, she has a right to do private things if she is sure no one is seeing. Conclusion: Cases of criminal voyeurism and abuse of maids human rights are likely to increase, much to the chagrin of maids rights to privacy, confidentiality, justice, autonomy and non-maleficence - prima-facie principles in ethics. House-wives are going to enforce their fake morals on maids. Many households already have a bad record when it comes to the rights of maids. Ethically, if you put a nanny-cam in a house, you MUST inform the maid, if indeed your interest is in ensuring she behaves well. If u keep it a secret, then your motives are beyond that - you want to know what she does in private 2. As the maids get sharper, they will have sufficient evidence to sue the living day lights out of their masters. All it takes is for a sharp maid to know where the video data is being stored - they dont even need to know where the f***ing nanny-cam is located. They can get themselves filmed in a self-choreographed compromising situation that appears to infringe on their rights. All they need then is to get hold of the video - then they can black mail whoever they want however they want. They can blackmail the male head of the house; they can black-mail the female head of house - they can even sue anyone for anything ranging from abuse to invasion of privacy - especially if the videos contain their private things. Ask Luzinda who filmed herself then coined a sham accusation against some decrepit Nigerian when she knew exactly what she was doing. Conclusion: Sharp maids can use the video footage as an opportunity for many many schemes to their benefit. All they need is to get hold of the data. 3. On a positive note for the maids, the Police Chief Kayihura has on todays news ordered that all those who have maids should register them and they should obtain licenses. Any attempt to formalize this industry will mean higher prices for the maids services - especially if a maid knows he/she is going to be under a 24-hour reality TV show. The cheapest maid may demand 500,000 yet their current median pay is 50,000/=. Conclusion: The true value of what maids do is going to manifest as increased prices. Registering them will create a new business from which some businessmen will benefit. For a maid to accept to work in a house where even the number of times she goes to the toilet and the sounds she makes while there are potentially recorded, the so called career building mothers and fathers will have to pay more
