(I wrote this earlier today. And several people have asked me to translate. So here goes. Sally and Kelly - this one is also for you. I wrote:) It is with great sadness that I receive the news of Robin Williams death. Although I did not know him personally, I still feel like I did. Ever since coming across Mork & Mindy as a 16-year-old exchange student in the US, and falling head over heels in love with the high-octane humor of his unbridled, no-speed-limit imagination, coupled with the touching poetry of his characters, which could only spring from the man himself. And such characters: Mork, Garp, The Fisher King, the radio host of Good Morning Vietnam, the teacher of Dead Poets Society, the photo developer in One Hour Photo, the killer in Insomnia, Genie in Aladdin, the doctor in Awakenings, Peter Pan in Hook, Mrs. Doubtfire, The Birdcage, Good Will Hunting, Saturday Night Live, and so much more. I was fortunate enough to experience him live in a standup comedy show in Ohio (thank you, Mecklings!!!) - it was like being run over by a benign time warp speed tsunami: you would lie back, gasping for breath, never knowing what hit you. But bubbling with belly laughter, and whoops - here was the next wave. Everything was caught mid-air, all detours taken at breakneck speed, leaping, skipping, dancing from one brilliant train of thought to the next, and bam! - a serve ace, a powerful punchline, and immediately moving on to the next topic, the next moment. And behind all this, a very private person, lonely even. An awkward, fumbling man for whom it was easier to explode in a fireball of humor and all-grabbing attention, rather than trusting that he himself would be enough. A person with crippling demons, abysmal restlessness, a deep, gentle kindness and the most beautiful poetry. Yeah, Im guessing here. But one of Robin Williams great gifts was being able to make you feel close to him. And today I lost a close friend I never had. Last night I revisited the Dead Poets Society, and saw Maja being just as affected by it, as I was, when I first saw it. Today, he is gone. But all that he gave us, remains. Dear Robin Williams, thanks for everything! I shall never forget you!
