If Pat Buchanan made another run for President, I would have to - TopicsExpress

If Pat Buchanan made another run for President, I would have to take a close look. Regardless of what some of his more extreme views might be, he is the most consistent voice for sanity in foreign policy in the US corporate media. In this recent column, he made me think about the positive aspects of nationalism, which I had always thought of as an unmitigated evil. After all, if we cannot learn to think of ourselves as citizens of a global society, can we ever know peace? He points out that in this dangerous, increasingly unipolar world nationalism is a force that is a natural enemy to Empire. Respect for national self-determination is the cornerstone of international law designed to prevent war. Buchanan advocates not only respecting national sovereignty but the right of cultural groups to declare their independence or at least autonomy through democratic means, from the Basque region of Spain to Crimea and Eastern Ukraine. He does seem to be a bit credulous about the claim that the breakup of Yugoslavia was all about the quest for autonomy and ignores the US role in promoting the Balkans War, but his general argument makes eminent sense. buchanan.org/blog/nationalism-nato-great-ally-6367 Gregory John OFlaherty John D Rachel John Harper John Mesler Hiroyuki Hamada Henrik Eger Scott Rickard David Arver Andrea Tosi Andre Fomine Beverly Garrett Mary Ann Soto Mary E.
