If you need to trim your parrots nails, the best way to do it is make it fun for the parrot to participate in. It is much easier to do through cage wire as it gives you easy access to their nails and stops them grabbing the file. Slowly desensitise your parrot to touching its toes through the wire paired with treats, build up to small filing actions on the end of the nails with your fingers, and desensitise to the file by pairing it with treats if they are scared of new objects. It is much easier to give a little file every now and again than to risk clipping the nails as you can easily cut to far, hit the quick and cause bleeding and pain. On a side note, if you have lots of natural perches or safety pumice perches you wont need to do this very often anyway - it is still great fun to train though!
