Im back in Cowdray Park Kitchen: In the centre of the very large HANSON Professional Kitchen, there was an large Island in the centre above a Working Unit. I had my pans hanging, ladles, spoons etc. and it was quite filled. On this particularly Sunday morning I was preparing a Roast Loin of Pork for 18 friends for lunch, making jus, apple sauce and everything else to accompany it. Everything was going well, the sun was beaming through the window, and I felt Happy. When I took the Loins of Pork out of the oven to rest before carving, I noticed that water was dripping, in one small drip at a time, from the Island and thought that I must have spilt some, at first. I carried on with cooking the vegetables etc. on the other side of the kitchen and heard more drips - to my horror. I was able to move the pork and all else from the work surface to the other side before - it seemed - SUDDENLY, The Island Fell, with all its hangings and was suspended from the ceiling by long electrical wires. One of the Laundry Staff had left a washing machine on upstairs and it had broken down and managed to flood the Laundry Room, and eventually, my Kitchen too. It was nearly a disaster, but I was able to get the plates served and Craig, our Butler, took the food in without saying a word...even to The Cowdrays ...until the full lunch was served with pudding and port and cheese and and and.... We had been wading in the flooded water whilst I put the food on the plates. Craig must have been shoes squelching as he served the food, but everyone was chatting and didnt remark! .......... Countless times, as he had to serve the plates 4 at a time.. ..He wasnt too happy that day - giggle giggle.
