Im quoting someone without permission, but here it is anyway. I hope to get permission soon but could not wait to share this vision (which was written by a physician) Imagine a world where when you walk into any store, none of the goods are marked with price tags. You know that some goods and some stores have a reputation for being more expensive than others, but you really dont know very much more than that. There arent many employees available to help you in this store (the ones that are there are all seemingly very busy), and when you ask them how much something will cost, they will either (a) make up a number, (b) hem and haw a little bit before giving you a ballpark figure based on their best guess, or (c) refer you to the business office. In any event, theyll resent you for asking. You cant even find out how much something costs by asking your neighbor, because the stores charge wildly different amounts to different people and there are a lot of package deals. The only practical way to find out how much something will cost is to wait for your credit card bill. None of the items you buy are returnable. This world Ive asked you to imagine is exactly akin to the world of medicine today.
