Immigration: Im a day late on President Obamas new immigration policy, however I believe it is the American people who will be a dollar short. Obama made a good speech. He usually does. The President is an impressive speaker who does a pretty good job focus-grouping his message. I dont have any issues with his words, but it is the numbers and actions within the executive orders I find troubling. Below Ill go issue by issue. A lot of folks are going to debate about whether or not Obama has the constitutional authority to do this. Others are going to praise the rich culture and advantages of a diverse America. These are partisan and ideological platitudes. They dont solve anything other than keeping the issue unresolved, regardless of how much we believe in these notions that is their effect. Is deportation a feasible possibility? No, it is a logistical nightmare used by politicians to pander to voters who just want illegal immigrants to disappear. Unfortunately this cat and mouse game never reaches a conclusion and just perpetuates our immigration problem. Along those lines I actually support the notion of high-skilled illegal immigrants being allowed to stay in the country. Those immigrants who will work beyond thresholds of welfare entitlement ought to be encouraged to stay and strengthen our economy. More bluntly, that work ethic is more American than some of our fellow countrymen who are content to living off the dole. My problem, however, is in the numbers. It is estimated that 11 million immigrants are undocumented. I cannot realistically perceive that of these numbers that somehow 5 million are of economic status suitable to contributing to the nations economic health, which I believe is our most pressing issue. The policy itself isnt bad, but it certainly isnt strict enough to make me approve of it. I believe the relative open-ness of Obamas immigration policy is a political calculation to secure Southwest and Latino voters for the foreseeable future. I also believe that the Republican Party, still reeling from back-to-back presidential defeats is salivating over a new constituency and will fail to find unity to come up with a counter proposal, even with their new gains in Congress.
