In 2001, after my mother passed away, I inherited three of her cats, along with my own, Felix. Over time, Felix and Archimedes passed away, leaving Kaos and Panther, who were brother and sister born of the same mother six months apart. Kaos was a tortoise shell calico cat, apparently a rare breed. Both are seventeen years old, almost 90 in human years. Two summers ago, we found out that Kaos had cat alzheimers; yes, there is such a thing. We knew that she would have an interesting life moving forward. Over the past week, Kaos began to walk gingerly down the stairs, but was still jumping on things and eating and drinking as normal. Yesterday, Kaos was coming down the stairs, and she fell about four steps from the bottom. We dont know what happened to cause this; she appeared fine up until then. At about 2 am today, I woke, and as I headed to the basement I saw Kaos at the bottom of the stairs. She was struggling to get up, but couldnt stand on her own. I put her in her bed, and made her comfortable. Occasionally, she would try to get up, but couldnt. I took her up to my room, and at about 6 am she struggled out of her cat bed and laid on my bed. Her breathing was very slow. It appeared that the time had come. We took her to the animal hospital; she barely moved, and her breathing was shallow. The vet said she was ill and suffering, more than she had appeared. It was time to say good bye. Kaos, thank you for everything. We will miss you terribly. I gave you my best, and that is all I can do. Say hi to Felix and Archimedes for us!
