In the last meeting we discussed the literary style of John Cheever and read his short story The Enormous Radio Here is the short summary by our new member Saarthak Sharma. It is a short story by John Cheever that revolves around a couple with an average income. Irene and Jim Westcott’s marriage had completed nine years and they lived on the 12th floor of an apartment. Since their old radio gave them troubles, Jim promised his wife that he would replace it. The very next day Irene was both delighted and depressed by the arrival of a huge gumwood cabinet. She took time to understand the functioning of the radio and enjoyed listening to her favorite tunes. However, one afternoon the radio malfunctioned and began playing back the daily conversations of their neighborhood. Irene grew an attachment to the new radio and would often laugh at the hilarious arguments in other households. Irene’s attachment to the radio led to a disturbance in Irene and Jim’s relations. She repetitively reassured him that their relationship wouldn’t be adversely affected. This abnormality made Jim get the radio fixed for 400 dollars. He found out that Irene had not managed to pay her bills. Agitated, Jim reminded her of all her misdeeds in the past. Irene imagined the radio broadcasting their conversation and begged Jim to be quiet. When she tried to listen again, the radio was broadcasting daily news and temperature! english307formsofmodernshortstory.web.unc.edu/files/2014/03/enormous_radio-by-John-Cheever.pdf
